PUBLIC PROFILE

Arthur Boucaut Jones

Local Resident

Murraylands · SA

Capt. Bouc, teacher, River Master

I am a retired school principal and teacher/trainer/consultant on school camping and youth adventure education. I am very concerned about the current dropout rate of high school students, currently 24%.
As a contribution to helping dropout teens to stay in education during their transition years 15-18, I am working on creating a fleet of Houseboat style School ships working as "Cocoons' to reset the thinking of these dropout teens at risk.

Avoca trust

Aerie College and the associated DGR Trust Avoca trust plans to establish a fleet of school ships working the Murray to hold Teens aged 15-18 at risk of education dropout. The SA Law dictates that these young people are required to continue their education. Parents are at risk of a fine if their children drop out of school.

Distinguished and Famous people from Widebay Burnett

✈️ Bert Hinkler

Bert Hinkler was born in Bundaberg in 1892 and attended North Bundaberg State School. He worked in local sugar mills and a foundry while developing an interest in mechanics and flight. In 1928 he completed the first solo flight from England to Australia. His later English home, named Mon Repos, was dismantled and brought to Bundaberg, where it became part of the city's aviation heritage. The Hinkler Hall of Aviation connects those international achievements with the local schoolboy who studied birds and built his own gliders.

🏏 Don Tallon

Wicketkeeper Don Tallon was born in Bundaberg in 1916, attended North Bundaberg State School and became an apprentice moulder at the foundry alongside his father. Cricket ran through the family, and his performances for Bundaberg helped attract Queensland selectors' attention. He went on to keep wicket for Australia, including on the unbeaten 1948 tour of England. After the war he also opened a sports shop in Bundaberg. His local association thus includes childhood, work and business as well as the early cricket behind his international career.

📚 P. L. Travers

P. L. Travers was born Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough in 1899, in the residence above the bank managed by her father. Her family moved away while she was young, long before the Mary Poppins books made her internationally known. The town commemorates the connection with a bronze statue near the birthplace, created through community support and unveiled in 2005. A bank manager’s daughter supplied the imaginative beginning behind one of literature’s best-known nannies, although the novels emerged from a much wider life.

🎖️ Duncan Chapman

Duncan Chapman was born in Maryborough in 1888 and attended local primary school and Maryborough Grammar. He served with the 9th Battalion at Gallipoli and is remembered as probably the first Australian ashore at Anzac, a distinction supported by Charles Bean’s account and Chapman’s own letter. The story also carried a painful family complication: after he was reported missing, his father spent months seeking confirmation that he was alive. Chapman later became a major with the 45th Battalion and was killed near Pozières in August 1916, aged twenty-eight. His Maryborough beginnings remained part of a brief, consequential life.
